TO RENT OR DO NOT RENT?
Some mountain bikers going to Gran Canaria choose to rent a bike, mainly for reasons of tranquility. You do not have to worry about dismounting the bike, pack it well and then reassemble it once you arrive at your destination. And above all, you do not want to run the risk of damaging your bicycle during transport.
Renting a bike also offers you the perfect opportunity to try something new. On the other hand, if you opt for a rental you will find yourself riding something unfamiliar, which may take some time to get used to.
The price of the bike rental is fixed by our rental partner. Depending on the model, a week rental for a mountain bike of good level is around 190-220 €. Lower period rentals have a higher daily cost.
Airlines generally charge about € 45-70 each route to transport the mountain bike, as well as any excess baggage costs. In addition, in the case of a stopover, the routes for each trip become 2. So the cost of transporting the bike is around 90-140 € per trip. At this price must be added the cost to buy a bike case, if you do not already have it.
In January 2018, the Ryan Air supplement for bicycle transport is summarized below:
€ 60 bought on Ryanair.com | € 70 bought at the airport. Supplement applied per article / per route. Maximum allowed weight of 30 kg per article.

If you’re about to fly with your mountain bike for the first time, a question you’re probably asking is “What solution should I take to transport my bike?“
Basically there are 2 options:
- Rigid or semi-rigid bag
- Cardboard box for bike transport
The padding in a semi-rigid case generally does a good job in protecting the bike inside. A semi-rigid Evoc travel bag costs around € 400. Rather expensive for single use. For around € 200 you can buy the Pro Chain Reaction Cycles on Chainreactioncycles
We use it regularly and we believe it is a decent product (the rating on the site is 4.1 / 5).
Rigid bags obviously do an even better job to protect your bike, but they weigh and cost more.
Regarding the weight of the baggage, the limit for the bikes in the hold of the aircraft is generally 30Kg. We invite you to exactly verify this information with the company you will fly with.
The alternative to the bike transport bag is to opt for a cardboard bicycle box, which you can easily find from your local shop. These are the boxes that bicycle companies use to ship their bikes. Normally you can get one of these boxes completely free and, with adequate internal padding, your bike can be sufficiently protected.

FLY WITH YOUR BIKE
Do you want to bring your bicycle? Please note that the oversized baggage policy varies by airline. Therefore, before booking your flights, we advise you to consult the airline regulations with which you will fly, in order to make an informed decision. Once you have booked your flights, we recommend that you contact the airline to let them know that you will bring a packed bicycle with you. If you purchase the ticket directly on the airline’s website, you can usually add special baggage for the bike to the ticket. Generally you can do this also at a later time.
